The Linguistic and Phonetic Peculiarities of Pakistani Languages and the Teaching of Urdu
Abstract

Urdu is the national language and lingua franca of Pakistan and is taught across Pakistan in majority of educational institutions. While most of the population is familiar with the language, there appears to be a percentage which hasn’t been exposed to Urdu at all, primarily due to a different mother tongue. Sindẖi and Pashto speakers, for instance, have different symbols of allophones in their scripts, therefore they often face difficulty in writing Urdu. This study is a survey of this situation, also highlighting issues which must be addressed.
