Abstract

The article discusses the role of European Christian missionaries in the field of education in British India and the services rendered by them to the languages and literature of the region. As rulers, the British had certain objectives in formulating their educational policies, whereas many Europeans contributed toward preserving the centuries’ old local traditions. The Germans in this regard made a considerable contribution to the study of local languages and their literature
