Abstract
Majīd Amjad’s poetic journey spans a period of about forty two years. His was a period of changing value systems across the cultural milieu of the world. This greatly influenced poets and writers and gave way to newer trends in thought and expression. Majīd Amjad did not formally follow or represent any particular ideological group, but his poetry is immersed in the essence of his time and age. Themes of historical oppression, class discrimination, social and economic crises and adversities of war, all find way into his poetry. One of the many distinctive features of his expression is the keen sense of social awareness. He understands his environment through his own experiences. This article is an exploration of the melancholic elements found in Amjad’s poetry, elements which reflect a deep social consciousness.
