Abstract

The works of Jorge Luis Borges, the globally-acclaimed twentieth century Latin American writer, began to be translated in Urdu in 1962. He liberated Latin American short story from the mimicry of European literary cannon. The amalgamation of philosophy, religion and texts of his predecessors as well as linguistic innovations in his short stories make his style complex. This paper, while giving historical account of Urdu translations of Jorge Luis Borges’ stories, attempts to investigate the extent to which the Urdu translators of his stories have been successful in conveying the meaning of his labyrinthine style in their translations.
