Ghalib and the Modern Mind
Abstract

This article discusses the futuristic quality of Mirza Ghalib’s poetry and its relevance to the present times. Urdu poetry has always upheld the importance of tradition and through the centuries, most poets have seldom deviated from accepted norms in their thematic and stylistic preferences. However, there is a small number that does deviate from this practice and one of the most distinguished names among such poets is that of Mirza Ghalib. His themes resonate not only with his own times but also ours, the times that were to exist later. The universality and timelessness of his poetry is the underlying theme of this article.
