Fasīḥ al-Lughāt, an Urdu–Urdu dictionary compiled by Ahsan Marehravi, was published serially in the literary magazine Fasīḥ al-Mulk between May 1905 and August 1910. Despite its significance in the history of Urdu lexicography, no comprehensive account of its individual instalments has previously been available. This article provides the first systematic documentation of all thirty-seven parts of the dictionary published in the magazine, identifying the relevant issues, page numbers, and the entries included in each instalment. It also reconstructs the historical background of the dictionary based on documentary evidence and corrects several misconceptions that have persisted regarding its compilation and publication. Although the dictionary appeared over a period of more than five years and eventually reached 360 pages, it remained incomplete. Its primary objective was to record and explain the words, expressions, and idioms employed in the Urdu poetry of Dagh Dehlvi. In this sense, Fasīḥ al-Lughāt may be regarded as an author dictionary, a specialized lexicographical work that documents and contextualizes the vocabulary of a particular writer. Had it been completed, it would have constituted a more valuable resource for the study of Dagh’s language and style. The article further offers a critical evaluation of the dictionary in the light of established principles of lexicography. It examines key components of dictionary-making, including headwords (lemmas), pronunciation, grammatical classification, definitions, usage labels or registers, etymology, orthography, and illustrative quotations (asnaad), while assessing their treatment in Fasīḥ al-Lughāt from the perspective of modern lexical semantics and lexicographical practice.
