Abstract

Nasir Kazmi was born in 1925, and therefore the year 2025 marks the centennial of his birth. He is counted among the most distinguished poets who emerged immediately after the creation of Pakistan and played a significant role in shaping the literary landscape of the new country. Mohammad Hassan Askari regarded him as the poet of Pakistani literature, a recognition that reflects the inimitable significance of his contribution to Urdu poetry. Nasir Kazmi’s first and only poetry collection published during his lifetime, Barg-i Nai, appeared in 1952. His other collections were brought out after his demise. Although his life was relatively short, his poetic legacy achieved a lasting and distinguished place in the history of the Urdu Ghazal. Among his many remarkable literary achievements, Pehli Bārish (First Rain) occupies a unique position. Through the composition of twenty-five homomeric Ghazals in a short verse form, Nasir Kazmi introduced an innovative dimension to the tradition of the Urdu Ghazal. Initially, some of these Ghazals were published in Nayā Daur, and later the entire collection appeared in book form under the title Pehli Bārish in 1975. The collection represents an important experiment in form and structure within Urdu poetry. This article focuses on those portions of the homometric Ghazals (Ghazals in uniform metre) that were either omitted from publication in Pehli Bārish or underwent revision during the process of publication. It highlights the exempted and revised verses and draws attention to the textual changes that occurred before the collection reached its final published form.
